"As we stand at the tunnel opening in hard hats and high-viz jackets, the hoardings behind which Londoners buzz down Dean Street into Soho can be seen 30 metres above.
Directly in front of us, a series of thick joists mind the gap that has been hollowed out and will eventually be filled by a new ticket hall.
“ 'That is the tunnel that takes you off eastbound, to Farringdon,' says Terry Morgan, as he points proudly to the other side of the pit wall.
"Beside us, where we have tramped between excavating machines and concrete sprayers, a station platform will be installed.
"You can just about imagine the scene in 2018, when Europe’s largest civil engineering project will be operational and 200,000 passengers will use Tottenham Court Road station every day."
